History and Organization
The Society was founded in 1977 when 83 graduates of the German Wine Academy were formally inducted in a ceremony at the German Embassy in Washington, DC. The Society has been present in the Bay Area since the early 1980s. The San Francisco Chapter was reorganized at the beginning of 2006 to operate under the guidance of a management board to be elected annually. More details may be found in the Chapter's newly drafted By-Laws.

Purpose
The S.F. Chapter together with the National Society seeks to:

  • promote the understanding, appreciation and knowledge of German wines,
  • assist members in their continuing education about German wines,
  • sponsor tastings, seminars, dinners and other meetings to enhance the appreciation of German wines, alone and when paired with food,
  • facilitate a dialogue between members and the wine growers, importers, exporters and the faculty of the German Wine Academy,
  • distribute current information on German wine vintages, viticulture achievements and developments.
